Oregon/Washington Fishing Report

Latest Article Why I Chose a Shimano Reel - by Bill Long

Hello fishermen,

Here is my current fishing report for Oregon & Washington waters.

Fishing Conditions:

Fishing has been great. We are on the tail end of the winter rum with Springers and summer Steelhead just around the corner.  The weather is perfect for Trout fishing with tons of opportunity and places to catch your limit.

Where to Fish, Washington:

The Kalama and the Lewis both seem to be getting both Springers and summer Steelhead, but in spotty numbers.  I think the guides seem to be doing well as they live and breathe our sport and know where to be and what to use.  Hang in there as these rivers always produce and will kick in any time.

For Oregon:
As for Oregon, so many choices.  The Wilson is seeing the tail end of the Broodstock Steelhead and the beginning of the summer run.  Of course the Springers are in too.  Last I saw & heard the numbers were down, but only cause the rain had not brought the river into shape.  The Nestucca too.

The Sandy seems to be doing well, but since the floods, and the blowing of the dam I'm not up to speed on all the changes...I have heard alot of good things going on there though.  The Clackamas at last hear was also slow, not to say though things can change like overnight.

Let's Talk Trout:

If Trout fishing is your fancy there are some good places right now for them too...I've added a link (see left) to the Trout Stocking Schedule for 2008.

West Salish Pond and Mt. Hood Community College Pond both have some good planters and some much larger fish. If your over on the West side, Commonwealth Lake and Bethany Pond both are getting good numbers of fish too.  Of course Hagg Lake is loaded, as well as another of my favorites...Silverton Reservoir.

What to use for Bait:
All baits are producing. Don't be afraid to change things up to find what they want. Sometimes it only takes a change-up to entice a strike. My method of choice usually goes like this...unless I know for sure 1 thing is working.

I start with Corky & yarn using a variety of colors and combos, then onto eggs, then onto Bobber & Jig. It all just depends on your liking and your style of fishing.

As for Trout, I also use the basics. Powerbait, eggs, and something new I just come into. The Berkley Gulp baits. I saw 2 fish well over 15" caught on the Nightcrawler formula. Doughbaits are working too. If fishing Detroit Lake area, I know of guys that slay them on cocktail shrimps.

Well guys, all for now. I will update when things change. Watch your water levels, and be ready.

Things on our site are changing all the time with new links, info, and design. Check back with us for some exciting changes. For feedback, or to be added to our mailing list please contact me at getintofish@gmail.com

Happy fishing.
